Initial Order & Chaos Research

Definition

Order:

Order

When I hear the word Order I instantly think of the justice system and law, as this is one of the most common subjects that would be covered with the word Order. Also by hearing the word I like to think that the military is a good way of enforcing order as they may create a war but they also try to stop wars from happening, police are also very helpful in day-to-day life with keeping order in place as they control the streets and try to ensure that nothing bad will happen.

Chaos:

Chaos

Whenever I hear the word Chaos I think of violence, gunshots, ruins and fire, this is because most films that feature violence and gunshots are normally places in which Chaos ensues. Also with hearing the word Chaos I think of rich companies full of corruption as this is what is common whenever someone rich has a lot of money, this is because they have so much or they get given a lot and they become corrupt because they don’t know what to do with it.

Word Association

Order – Court –  Law –  Police –  Suspect – Evidence – Victim – Prison – Cell – Icy – Cold – Wet – Rain – Thunder – Storm – Tornado – Wind – Calm – Relaxed – Quiet – Content – Happy

Chaos – Anarchy – Disorder – Destruction – Ruins – Bombs – Fire – Flames – Gas – Carbon Dioxide – Oxygen – Trees – Humans – Rich – Money – Corrupt – Bankrupt – Broke – Broken – Glass – Windows

With my word association I decided to split it up into 2 pathways, 1 for Order and 1 for Chaos, I did this as it would allow me to create 2 word associations and allow me to gather even more words which would go together and be helpful for my research. I started with Order first as I felt like this would be the quicker one to complete as I knew a lot of words that would be able to fit in, I decided to go with court as the second word as that is a direct link to Order and is normally a very orderly place, from that I moved onto police, which led onto prison, which eventually led me to happy. All these words I wrote down do link to Order but it’s finding the link which is important. The next word association I did was for Chaos, this one took me a bit longer to get started as I was getting stuck on some words, but I persevered and eventually got a lot of words down. From Chaos I went straight to anarchy, I did this as I felt it was a good word and describes violence which in turn leads us to Chaos. Following anarchy I went on to the word ruins as this can describe a place that has been overrun by Chaos, I then linked in humans, which led me to corrupt and broken. All of the words I wrote down I feel link to Chaos but they are also the words I think of when I hear the word Chaos.

Mind map

For my mind map I started with the word order and chaos, I then split these into 2 separate sides of the mind map as this made it easier for me to work. Due to complications and being unable to resolve these problems I stopped using mind map maker and decided to create a mind map on some A4 paper.

Order & Chaos Mind Map

With my mind map I decided to split the theme Order & Chaos into 2 separate categories, I decided to do this as it would allow me to have a good layout and allow me to clearly focus on one word of the theme at a time. I started my mind map by writing the words Order and Chaos in the centre of the page, after that I then wrote Order on the left hand side of the page and Chaos on the right hand side, by writing one word on each side of the page it allows me to split the theme up easily and ensures I can correctly place each word to match the theme. I decided to start with the Order side first as I was more confident in being able to label more items on this side as I believed this was the subject I had more knowledge on, after I labelled the Order side I started on the Chaos side, despite believing I had more knowledge on the Order side I feel like I was also quite knowledgeable on Chaos as I managed to get a fair few words down.

Moodboards

Chaos: Buildings

In this moodboard above I focused heavily on buildings as that was one of the main areas on my mindmap however these set of buildings are on the chaotic side of the theme, I chose to do this moodboard first as it’s my favourite part of the theme and there are so many images I can choose from. For this moodboard though I wanted to focus more on destroyed buildings and structures that have been taken over by nature. One of the images I like the most is the very first image on the moodboard which is a 3D model of a destroyed building, I like this design as it’s helped me to decide what I want to use for one of my ideas. A lot of the other buildings I chose because they have been broken away over time and are now in a destroyed and ruined state, this is incredibly helpful and can give me more information and also help with my ideas generation for my ideas.

Chaos: Characters

This moodboard I made focuses heavily on characters from the chaotic side. For this moodboard I chose a bunch of different characters such as sorceresses, warlocks and wizards and I also featured a couple of pictures of characters from Mad Max. In this moodboard I wanted to catch the embodiment of Chaos by choosing characters that looked evil or characters I knew were evil/chaotic. I chose the Mad Max characters as I know that film is very chaotic and therefore it seemed like a good idea to find pictures of the characters and add them to the moodboard as most people know who they are. Another character type I chose for this moodboard is a necromancer as they can be considered chaotic, they spawn creatures from the ground and tend to focus heavily on learning dark magic and performing these enchantments/spells.

Chaos: Vehicles

This moodboard is based on vehicles however the vehicles I chose for this moodboard solely focus on Chaos. Some of the vehicles in this moodboard are from the movie Mad Max, I chose them because they look really good and just by looking at them we can see that they are chaotic. The other vehicles that I have added to this moodboard I chose because most of them all have 1 thing in common and that is spikes on the front of the bumper. I feel like spikes are a good way to make anything look chaotic or evil because when they are added to a vehicles it looks a lot more sadistic and brutal than without them, this is why a lot of the vehicles have them. Some of the other vehicles I chose have a gun attached to the roof of the car which also looks good and can help the audience identify that it is a chaotic vehicle.

Order: Buildings

This next moodboard I have created is dedicated to buildings that are linked to Order. For this moodboard I wanted to get various pictures of different buildings that are all linked to order, half of the images on this moodboard are based on Courts as I felt they were one of the most suitable buildings to tie in with the Order theme. I also chose a lot of different houses as well because they look really well made and I feel they also fit in with order because of how clean they look. This was also another reason of why I chose Courts as they look really clean, also to tie in with Courts I got a couple of pictures of Gavels as these are an important part of the justice system and link in well with Order.

Order: Characters

This moodboard that I have created is based on soldiers and police officers as this is a moodboard for characters that are tied in with Order. I felt that this was an essential moodboard to create as I had previously created a moodboard for characters linked to Chaos so I had to create a moodboard for characters linked to Order. This moodboard was a nice one to make as I got to choose which pictures I wanted but there were so many pictures to choose from which made it fun. I chose the pictures which I felt correctly described order just based on the picture, as well as Police officers and soldiers I also focused on gathering pictures of judges, jury’s and kings. One of my favourite pictures on this moodboard is the picture of the solider with the face mask which is the first picture we see when we look at the moodboard, this is my favourite picture as he looks really good and we can see he has a gun however due to his attire that he is wearing we can see he works for the law and therefore he is linked to Order.

Order: Vehicles

This is the final moodboard that I created and I made sure that this moodboard stayed with the theme and is focused on vehicles that have to do with Order. A lot of the vehicles on this moodboard are army vehicles such as trucks and tanks, I have also included a few army helicopters as I feel that all of these buildings are a good way to show Order since that are linked to forces that are with the law and therefore this is a sign of Order. As well as army vehicles I have also included multiple types of police vehicles these include: Motorbike, Car, Helicopter and Truck, these vehicles were very important to include as the police is a force that is recgonised for keeping Order and therefore including vehicles that they use will reinforce the idea of Order.
